The Tiger’s Whisker
Marriage is one of the biggest things for a person. Nobody wants to live alone forever, but also no one wants to live with a person that he or she doesn’t love. In the story “The Tigers’ Whisker,” the main character, Yun Ok, is married to a man who treated her badly. Then she went to ask an old man, who helped people solve many problems, for some advice. The old man told her go to get a whisker from a living tiger first then he will help her. Later, Yun Ok went to the cave, and put a bowl of delicious food in front of the cave. Day by day, she got closer to the tiger. Finally, the tiger agreed to let her take a whisker. Yun Ok took it, and gave the precious whisker to the old man. However, the old man burned the whisker and said, “If you know how to tame a vicious tiger, surely you can do the same with you husband.”
The story ended with the old man’s advice. The old man didn’t help Yun Ok directly; instead he gave her some complicated advice. First of all, the old man means that the tiger was more vicious and dangerous than Yun Ok’s husband which also means the tiger was more difficult to deal with. If she can make the tiger be willing to give a whisker to her, it wouldn’t be difficult for her to deal with her husband. When we face the challenge, usually we will feel nervous, anxious or depressed. Those negative emotions may affect our judgment to find the solution. Some people cannot suffer the negative feelings so they give up. Therefore, if we patiently think about what the real problem is, we will get closer to the solution. There is not a problem that cannot solve if we try. However, if we don’t try anything to fix the problem, we will never solve the problem. At first, before Yun Ok met the old man, she never thought about how to solve the problem between her and her husband by herself. Instead, she found another way, which was gone to ask the old man.
The story is telling us that we need to patiently face frustration, and not let the negative feeling control us. That will only make the situation getting worse.
