Profile: Slaughterhouse
This profile is about Sandy Wilkans. She works in a Slaughterhouse as a human resources director. This job is to hire and fire people. She got master’s degree. Then, she worked in consulting firm as a vocational rehabilitation counselor but the firm no longer needed her. So, she found the slaughterhouse human resources director this job in an ad. She works twelve-hour a day, six days a week. Most of this job is to hire people and train them. Once, she hired 85 people and 92 left. The workers slaughter those cows step by step like production line. After they slaughter cows they keep all the parts of the cows including intestines. She helps the workers a lot because there are many people; most of them are from other countries. They don’t speak English. She has to explain them and helps them to solve their problems either work or personal problems. She said, “I’m kind of like their mom.” However, her supervisors don’t care about the workers at all. She is tired of this job, she wants to have more time doing her own things and spending time with her family.
One thing that surprised me is how she could handle this job so long. This is a terrible job. I think most women with a master’s degree would not go to do this job. The working condition is bad and the supervisor also. Maybe, she stays so long because she wants to help those people. Those people can’t speak English, they can’t do anything and they were frightened.
She is a very nice lady. That makes me think about current society. People become more realistic, selfish and cruel. Like her supervisors she mentioned, “ he literally treats the people like meat.” A lot of managers or owners don’t care about their workers like Sandy does. They just care about when the job is finished. Companies should care more about their workers as well as care about their business.
